Story

One Year: 2022

One Goal: 2022KM

One Purpose: Raising money for the incredible work of Barnsley Hospital supporting babies and families

One Target: £2022

I’m running 2022KM in 2022 to support the exceptional Barnsley Hospital family services and I’d love you to join me and help raise £1 per KM!

You can follow my progress on Instagram via @ben_hamps or on Strava, search for Ben Hampshire.

I’d love you to grab a brew and take a moment to read why I’m doing this…

Like for so many people, a LOT has changed in this last year…including;

  • Losing six stone
  • Crossing the big 3-0 milestone
  • Becoming a dad

The Challenge

To mark all of these landmark moments, I got a little bit reflective and decided it was time to take on a significant challenge. In the year of 2022, I will run 2022KM, including completing my first ever marathon in October at the Yorkshire Marathon.

I know fundraising through a marathon is common, but I want to try and go a step further and have a challenge spanning the whole year. Here how it breaks down…

2022KM = 1264Miles

Average = 5.54KM / 3.6Miles per day

The Context

Back in March 2021 I went for my first “real” outdoor run and like many people, I caught the running bug during lockdown and it’s helped transform my health and life in ways I could have never imagined.

Fast forward to 2022 and putting my new-found love of running to good use by backing a cause which means so much to us as a family - and so many people in Barnsley!

On August 26 2021 we welcomed our daughter, Arabella Hampshire, into the world and our experience with the team at Barnsley Hospital was nothing short of outstanding.

Arabella was breach so arrived via a planned c-section and both Kerry and Arabella were home settling into family life no less than 22 hours after she arrived in the world!

For us, this was an incredible experience start to finish and that is all credit to the remarkable team at Barnsley Hospital!

Throughout pregnancy and after Arabella’s arrival, the antenatal and postnatal support, especially when becoming first-time parents in the midst of a global pandemic, could not have been any better!

The Cause

Our experience was what you may call “textbook,” but we know for many families, including close friends and family of our own, there is a need for much more support from the hospital team through the pregnancy, birth and postnatal phases and we would love to put something back into Barnsley Hospital to support these critical services!

So here’s to my way of saying the biggest heartfelt thank you to the incredible team supporting families and new babies in Barnsley!

Also, I want to set an example to my daughter and anyone following that wherever you start from, you can set ambitious goals and with drive and dedication you can achieve them!

The Call

I’d love to ask you to support me in any way you can and give to this truly worthwhile cause!

Ps. While I’m asking you to give generously, I do appreciate we’re living in a time where cost of living is increasing, so if you can’t afford to donate too much, please support my challenge by following progress and sharing the story on Instagram (@ben_hamps) or giving me a wave if you see me plodding the streets (generally around Royston!).

If you fancy joining me for a run anytime to support the cause, drop me a message!
