We are Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We stop at nothing to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. Because we believe no childhood should be lost to illness.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In August last year my two dear friends gave birth to a wonderful little boy, he was called Toby Hambrook-skinner. I was lucky enough to meet him when he was just a couple of weeks old and he was awesome, smily and happy. Sadly just a few weeks later Toby was diagnosed with an incredibly rare form of Cancer and was immediately admitted into Great Ormond Street Hospital along with his parents Verity and Nathan. For 7 months this became their home whilst Toby, his parents, the nurses and doctors battled this terrible disease. Not much is known about Toby's particular form of Cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) and treatment was brutal, particularly for someone so young.

Amazingly, despite the odds being stacked against him, Toby started winning the fight and by the end of the year the Cancer looked to be in remission. Heartbreakingly this was to prove to be a false dawn and on News Year Day the results confirmed that Toby had relapsed. From this point the only course of action left available was even more aggressive chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. As usual Toby took to this new challenge like the hero that he was and again, against all odds, the transplant seemed to be taking and the Cancer being held at bay. At the same time though Tobys immune system was decimated by the treatment and he contracted a chest infection that even he was unable to fight.

On the 16th of March 2017 Toby Alexander Luke Hambrook-Skinner passed away. Despite the relentless efforts of everyone involved at GOSH the Cancer was too aggressive and not enough known about it to treat effectively.

It doesn't seem right that today, children are still dying from leukaemia or its treatment.

It has to change. We need kinder cures. More reliable cures.

Tobys parents have been through an unimaginable and devastating agony and they don't want to see other children and parents suffer. They want to see a brighter future for children with cancer. Toby has his own fund set up at Great Ormond Street Hospital, it's called: Toby Hambrook-Skinner Brighter Future Fund.
