Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I'm running the Lincoln 10K to raise funds and awareness for the Stroke Association.
I'm running because a close family member suffered a series of strokes at the end of 2014 - before it happened I was oblivious to how indiscriminate a stroke is and how fatal it can be - but also how debilitating it can be for survivors.
- Stroke occurs approximately 152,000 times a year in the UK;
that is one every 3 minutes 27 seconds. - Stroke is the fourth single largest cause of death in the UK and
second in the world. - Stroke kills twice as many women as breast cancer and more
men than prostate and testicular cancer combined a year. - Stroke is the largest cause of complex disability – half of all
stroke survivors have a disability. - Over a third of stroke survivors in the UK are dependent on
others, of those 1 in 5 are cared for by family and/or friends.
Everyone is at risk of a stroke - not just the old or overweight, it can happen to anyone at anytime; it is not unusual for strokes to be of an undetermined cause.
At the start of May I decided to change my life around and get healthier - to reduce the risks of it happening to me. I joined a local slimming club and also began running - to date I have lost 2 stone and regularly run 3 times a week.
This is my first 10K road race - and means a complete sacrifice of precious family time as I put in the time on late night and early morning runs - but its worth it. The time I have with my family is enhanced, I'm less stressed, less tired and more fun as I have more energy.
I am a long way from my destination but I am enjoying the journey - your support be it financial, a high five, a hug or a cheery wave is greatly appreciated!
