Story

In November 2013 my father, Martin Seifert, was extremely ill with myelodysplasia. There came a time when it was necessary for him to have palliative care and he was fortunate to have a room in this wonderful, supportive environment. St John's Hospice provided him with exceptionally dedicated nursing and medical care. There was nothing that the incredible staff could not do to assist him.

For us, his family, we felt completely welcomed to be with him at all hours. In the last week of his life we were even given mattresses and we slept next to him in his room. I was so impressed with the unflappability of everyone who worked there and when he sadly died on 14 November 2013 we knew that he had been looked after with dignity, kindness and respect.

When I obtained a place at this year's New York City Marathon there was no question that this would be the charity for me because few people are aware of the amazing work performed by these dedicated professionals.

I hope that, as well as raising money for this exceptional charity, I can increase awareness for the hospice movement which provides care to many thousands of people throughout the country.
