With the ongoing conflict in Yemen already one of the poorest countries in the region over 20 million people don't know where their next meal will come from. A country crippled by conflict is sadly now on the brink of famine.

Story

  • 24 million people are in need of humanitarian aid. The world's biggest humanitarian crisis.

  • Yemen now officially hosts the worlds largest human-induced food security crisis.

  • The UK Government are giving more arms/weapons to Saudi Arabia than any other country in the world. The UK is Saudi Arabia's biggest arms dealer after the USA, in the world. Saudi Arabia's military are the leading force against Yemen.

  • Families and communities have been torn apart and left without even the most basic of living essentials:- 19.7 million people need basic healthcare- Almost 18 million people are in need of water and sanitation facilities- Over 3 million people have been left displaced by conflict

  • Extreme hunger and disease may have already claimed the lives of up to 85,000 young children

  • Coronavirus/COVID-19 deaths from confirmed cases are currently 5 times higher than the global average

I am fasting for Yemen from 7th August-21st August, although I may extend this to a full 4 week fast if I feel I can continue. I am fasting because Yemen is starving to death. I thought fasting would be appropriate because I want to draw attention to the fact that these people are starving and I also aim to enlighten myself at least slightly to feelings of hunger. This is because I live a completely privileged life and I wish to understand better the suffering of others even if it is only on a very small scale. Any money you donate, is linked with Islamic Relief and will go directly to their fund.

I have chosen to donate to Islamic Relief as Yemen is a Muslim country, which has been supported by Islamic Relief for over 20 years. Islamic Relief is currently providing over 2 million people with food every single month. But they need our help to do even more!

I planned to mimic Ramadan, in line with the Muslim faith. Not eating or drinking during daylight hours. However, before the fast I have practised not drinking water for prolonged hours and have found it extremely difficult. I know that Muslims do this for one month every single year and their patience and willpower is incredible for achieving this for their faith. Still, disappointingly, I feel that this would not be manageable for me, when I have never done this before and when I will be doing it alone. I don't want to jeopardise the fast because the main goal is to raise much needed money for Yemen, therefore I will be drinking tap water during daylight hours.

I was advised by Islamic Relief to eat from 9:30pm to around 4:30am as this window is after sunset and before sunrise. Still, due to me drinking water, I am going to decrease my eating window, in an attempt to make up for this. I will be eating between 9:30pm and 2:30am only.

I will also be posting video updates throughout the weeks, showing my fasting and updating as to how I'm getting on, as well as giving more information about the Yemen crisis in each video, in an attempt to raise more awareness.

I am so grateful to anyone who is able to donate, even if it's £1, it will still go towards helping the suffering in Yemen! Thank you so much!
