Charity 10km for CHECT · 11 July 2020

Although all Royal Parks are closed for mass gatherings, our magnificent TeamCHECT will be taking part in a VIrtual RunThrough on 11 July at an open space near their own homes. Please help them to raise vital funds for CHECT.

Story

Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) is the UKs only charity dedicated to helping people affected by Retinoblastoma (Rb). Rb is a cancer that begins in the retina of the eye and is most prevalent in babies and young children. Angharad received this diagnosis when she was 9 months old and the only available treatment option was to have her right eye removed.

CHECT is a small charity that works tirelessly to support families of children with Rb. They provide practical resources, raise funds for research to help further progress treatments and influence policy to improve services.

Angharad has worked closely with CHECT in her adult life. In 2016, she created and edited TeenFocus, a magazine that aims to support young people that had Rb, helping them to come to terms with the lifelong effects of a cancer they may not even remember having. This year, Angharad conducted an audit on the Rb Service in the Royal London Hospital and saw first-hand the difference a CHECT support-worker has on the child's and their families experience before, during and after treatment.

As a small charity CHECT receives no government funding and relies on the kindness of others to provide its services. Currently, there is only 1 support worker available for each of the Rb centres of Birmingham and London.

This run aims to raise funds to support CHECT to maintain and grow its critical services, but also to raise awareness of a cancer that if spotted and diagnosed early has effective treatments that can save a child's eyesight. Milly will be accompanying Angharad on this charity 10k to support her best friend of the last 16 years.

Originally, this run was supposed to take place in Regent's Park, London. However, due to Covid-19, the run will now take place socially-distanced in Bute Park, Cardiff on the same date of Saturday 11th July!
