Richmond RUNFEST Marathon 2021 · 12 September 2021 ·
One day in late January 2021, deep in the winter lockdown, I
decided I wanted to be able to say I had run a marathon before the old pins finally gave up (2 partial meniscectomies and counting). I found a 16 week
training plan online which I have largely stuck to apart from a couple of minor
injuries and my first vaccine jab aftereffects. A few weeks into my
training I started running with my older brother Pete, a Hong Kong resident who
was unable to return home after a Christmas visit. We hatched a plan to try and
run every weekend together as part of the increasingly knackering
training. Fast forward to now and after our preferred Richmond Marathon
was postponed till September for Covid safety reasons, we have both been given
a spot at the Kempton Marathon. Despite the slightly less glamourous
route; swapping the sweeping Thames to Hampton Court and back for laps of the
racecourse, we are committed to giving it our best shot. Strange
coincidence for us both, we know the area well. I learnt to drive in the
Kempton carpark aged 12 on a cushion in my Mum’s old Renault 5 (they were
different times and obviously not on race days!). And it is in her memory
that we are doing this; my chosen charity is the Alzheimer’s Society, Pete’s is Alzheimer's Research UK:

If you fancy adding to the pot please do but in any case
please wish us old codgers luck!
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
