Story
I am running the Southampton Half Marathon in September 2021 to raise money for the Southampton Hospital Paediatric Eye Unit research fund. Specifically the research fund under Henry’s incredible Consultant/Surgeon Dr Jay Self, who's research covers disorders affecting vision in children including nystagmus (eye wobble), which Henry has been left with.
In June 2019 our gorgeous son Henry was born blind, with cataracts in both eyes. Henry has had 3 surgeries to remove the lenses in his eyes, dealt with the difficult after care and now wears daily contact lenses.
Although Henry will always have a degree of visual impairment that glasses and lenses can't fix, we are incredibly lucky that we have had the NHS, specifically, Southampton Hospital Paediatric Eye Unit. They were quick to act and gave him impeccable care, and for that reason he is doing better than we could have hoped.
Children come from as far as Cornwall to get their exceptional care, so we feel so lucky to have them on our doorstep.
I would like to raise money for funds to help children get the best possible outcome through research into nystagmus, and the genetic disorders which cause paediatric cataracts.
No matter how small, your donation would be greatly appreciated :)
