What is the Order of Malta?
The Order of Malta is a Catholic organisation, founded in Jerusalem in the eleventh century with a Christian undertaking to help the poor and the sick with total impartiality. 
Today there are Order of Malta organisations in 60 countries, with projects in 120 countries in five continents. The work is carried out by the Order’s 13,500 members, 80,000 permanent trained volunteers and over 25,000 medical and social personnel.

 

Action hIghlights right now: caring for Syrian refugees, in the country itself and in Lebanon and Turkey; soup kitchens and aid for the homeless in Europe; caring for victims of gender violence in Africa; providing clean water and disaster prevention training in Africa and Asia.
Where we are and what we do: Medical and humanitarian activities
-Volunteer corps in 15 countries. Services include first aid, social aid, activities for elderly and handicapped;
-30 ambulance corps around the world;
-40 Hospitals (Africa – Benin, Cameroon, Senegal, Togo; Asia – Cambodia; Europe - Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom; the Americas - Haiti);
-1,500 Clinics and dispensaries  (Africa – Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comores, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Senegal, Sudan/Darfur; Middle East – Afganistan, Lebanon; the Americas – Canada and the United States, Brazil, El Salvador, Haiti);
-110 Homes for older people (including special focus of 71 in England);
-Specialised institutions for the handicapped (Belgium, France, Germany, United States);
-Fight against leprosy Asia (India, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam); Africa (Niger, Guinea, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Senegal, Mauritania, Gabon, Benin, South Sudan, Kenya, Egypt); South America (Brazil);
Mother and child care (maternity hospital in Bethlehem, clinics and kindergartens for children from the slums in Brazil, Dominican Republic, Mexico).
