We provide free specialised surgical care to children with treatable disabilities

Story

It's only slightly mad walking 100km or 62 miles in 24 hours. To put this in perspective it's like popping from Southampton to London OR Lithgow to Sydney....IN A DAY.....BY FOOT!

The reason? The maternal mortality rate in Afghanistan is currently at 6,500 per 100,000 live births (currently about 10 per 100,000 in the UK).  That is the same as having a 1 in 16 chance of dying in childbirth!  Local doctors need training to improve what is a dreadful situation. It costs about £6000 to train a single local doctor in obstetrics and gynaecology.  My colleagues at the Medical Research Council in Southampton have raised a fantastic £5300 through various activities. Completing the Death March is a fabulous opportunity to raise the final £700 for this very worthy cause.  Money we raise is forwarded through CURE International (UK) straight to the CURE hospital in Kabul and directly funds the training of an Afghan doctor.

I travel to Bornem Belgium in mid August and have from 9pm to 9pm to complete this challenge.  I really need all the support I can get as not only has this activity got the word 'death' in the title but this year it starts on Friday 13th!

To help improve the lives of women and children in Afghanistan please dig deep.

Thanks a bundle!
