Vermilion Are Climbing a Munro for Fresh Start

Climbing a Munro for Fresh Start · 17 June 2022
Fresh Start came to the attention of our founder, Dr David Offord, in 2018. A fantastic cause and one that is close to David’s heart, he first spurred Team Vermilion on to raise vital funds for Fresh Start that same year when we walked 20 miles from Melrose to Kelso. There were a few blisters, aches and sores on the way (and after), but we did it and, together, we raised £2,500.
Last year, we decided to walk the entire length of the Water of Leith Walkway - a total distance of 13 miles or a half marathon - to raise awareness and funds for this fantastic charity. Together, we raised £3,370!
This year, we are doing it all again. But taking on a bigger challenge and walking a Munro on Friday 17th June 2022! Every donation gratefully received will boost us along our journey and help those who need it most.
From all at Vermilion -
Thank you!
A Note From Fresh Start
"A home is somewhere where we feel safe, secure, warm and loved. However, for many, a wrong choice, bad experience, bereavement or relationship breakdown can result in the loss of their home.
"Homelessness can mean sleeping on a friend’s sofa, staying in a homeless B&B or hostel or in the worst scenario – sleeping rough on the streets. This can have a devastating effect and lead to feelings of isolation and despair.
"Being offered a new home is a lifeline, a chance to make a ‘Fresh Start’. However, being given a tenancy is only a first step, what next? Being homeless means you have nothing, and imagine moving into a new flat with nothing. Furnishing a house and making it into a home when you have nothing is an overwhelming prospect.
"This is where Fresh Start steps in; we are a small, Edinburgh based charity and our mission is to ‘help people make a home for themselves’. One of the ways that we do this is by providing goods in the form of Starter Packs of everyday household items such as crockery, pots and pans, toiletries, cleaning products, curtains – all the small things that are so important. These Starter Packs help people in the initial stages of their new tenancy, to lessen the financial burden and stress involved in setting up a home.
"Not only does Fresh Start provide essential goods to people but we also provide social and practical support and skills to help people feel part of the community. Through a painting and decorating service (Hit Squads), cooking classes and gardening, clients work alongside volunteers to gain the confidence and skills needed to live independently. This is a key part of the journey out of homelessness – meeting new people, building confidence and self-esteem and learning practical, life skills.
"Finally, Fresh Start’s Training Initiative offers the opportunity to gain skills, experience and qualifications that help people to get back into employment. Trainees benefit from working in a positive and supportive environment alongside staff and volunteers and hopefully by the end of the course are ready to move into employment.
"Through your donation, Fresh Start can make a real difference to someone’s life, helping someone settle in their home and gain the skills and confidence to move forward with their life."
