On the 17th July my boyfriend, Chris, and I will be travelling to Tanzania to climb ( or at least attempt to climb) to the highest point in Africa, summiting on my 18th birthday. I will be embarking the 7 day trek to the summit of Uruhu peak in aid of Diabetes UK and aim to raise 589.50 pounds, 10p for every meter that we will be climbing.
Diabetes uk is britain's leading charity in caring for, connecting with and campaigning on behalf of the 700 people that are diagnosed with this condition every day, a condition very personal to myself as it affects both sides of my family. I never knew this disorder had such a detrimental and disabling effect on its sufferers until my grandad lost his leg 2 years ago. The poor circulation that the disorder gave him meant that a simple cut on one toe lead to the amputation of the toe then the foot and then rapidly up to the knee.
My other grandad, whom this page is in memory of, suffered loss of sight as a result of the disorder. People with this condition are 5 times more likely to suffer cardiovascular disease and it has been considered one of the causes of his heart attack which unfortunately lead to his death when I was 2.
As the most common cause of vision loss and blindness, lower limb amputation and kidney failure, this power of this disease lies in its life changing defects that significantly reduce the quality of life and as it now affects 1 in 16 Britons, both diagnosed and unidentified, is a disorder very much on the increase and yet the fantastic campaigning of awareness and support groups of such charities are often overlooked.
This is undoubtedly the most exciting yet scary task I have ever had to face, I hope you wish to share the journey with us both by kindly giving what you can to each of our fantastic charities, any donation however small will be greatly appreciated by myself and Chris who is donating for Asthma UK at
