Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

Story

I was hospitalised with sepsis at the beginning of April and my experience made me realise that few people understand what sepsis is - a life-threatening condition.

Fortunately I already knew of the work of the Sepsis Trust, which raises awareness of sepsis to help prevent deaths.

Fundraising is at the heart of the trust's fight against sepsis. It raises awareness, and sparks the question: “What is sepsis?"

In this way, fundraising can help prevent thousands of deaths and unnecessary suffering through knowledge and awareness of the symptoms.

It also funds the trust's vital support work in terms of increasing, public awareness, educating health professionals and helping people adjust to life after sepsis through accessing the trust's support group network.

The Sepsis Trust also lobbies government to makes vital changes in areas such as the NHS.
