Story
It’s one of those things that I’ve had on my list of things to do before I’m 30! Yet still every year I wake up on a Sunday morning in April, turn the TV on and watch all those thousands of people running the 26.2 miles and think, “I’ll do that next year”!
Well, fortunately (or unfortunately!!) for me, 2008 will be the year that I finally add one big tick to that list as on 13 April, I will be pounding the streets of the capital in the 28th Flora London Marathon.
Just incase anyone had forgotten, less than 2 years ago, I had an operation to repair ruptured ligaments in my left knee. At one point it looked as though I may not be able to play my beloved sport of football ever again, but after a successful operation (thank you once again Mr Ellis!) and plenty of physiotherapy, I was back playing football after 5 months.
Having only ever played football as regular exercise and never running more than 4 miles in one go, running the marathon will be one of the most difficult things I would have faced in my 25 years on this planet. This, of course, is nothing compared to the sacrifices made by those involved with Farleigh Hospice, a highly commendable and worthy cause.
I have been extremely fortunate to secure a place running for this charity based in Chelmsford, Essex. The Hospice cares for individuals and their families who have been touched by cancer or other life limiting illnesses. It's about extra-ordinary people taking the time to improve the lives of others; about adding life to days, even when days can't be added to life. They are the sole provider of hospice care in Mid Essex and the huge range of services they provide are offered completely free of charge.
The Hospice can only continue to provide this care by people fundraising on their behalf and by relying on the generosity of those willing to give. The Hospice itself costs £3 million to run per year, and they only receive £1 million from the NHS. The remaining £2 million all has to come from charitable donations, with the Flora London Marathon being one of the biggest fundraising events of the year for them.
So to give me the much needed morale boost but more importantly, to benefit such a worthwhile charity, please be kind enough to pledge your support and give whatever you can, every little helps....
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Farleigh Hospice will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
Many thanks for your support
