We are all running in the Plymouth Running Festival for PCiP -
Declan - Half Marathon -
I started running as a new venture in January 2023, as a New
Years Resolution to get myself in a fitter state. As someone who never excelled in PE at school, it was always going to be a challenge but one that I have thoroughly enjoyed so far. This is my first organised run and a chance to prove to myself I can do it. It also provides a brilliant opportunity to help Plymouth Children in Poverty, a fantastic charity who I have worked with on other volunteering opportunities. They have a fantastic mission, make a real difference in the lives of children in Plymouth and a truly worthy cause.

I have been running on and off for years, and I took it a little
more seriously during lockdown – I'm not a gifted runner, so when I saw the opportunity to run for Plymouth Children in Poverty I thought it may give me the kick I need to be consistent with (some) training!I find running really helps with my mental health and general fitness, and my goal is to get my doggo out with me (although he would put me to absolute shame at the moment!) and be out in nature more as the weather brightens.
Rhiannon - Half Marathon
I started running about 5 years ago and found it had a really positive impact on my mental health (although slightly at the detriment to my knees). This is my first race and the challenge has proved to be an excellent motivator. I live by the sea so my favourite place to run is along the costal path, me and the dog go for a swim together afterwards. I am running in support of Plymouth Children in Poverty. The levels of child poverty in the city are at 18%, I am glad to be able to raise money to help to lower this figure and achieve my personal goals.

It has been such a pleasure working with Plymouth Children in
Poverty on social responsibility projects this past year. They do fantastic work across education, literacy, food and health, but with around 10,000 children living in poverty in this city there is a lot more to be done. Whilst running is something I do rather infrequently…I am really looking forward to the buzz of taking part in this event and fundraising for such a worthy cause.
PCiP spearheads Plymouth Drake Foundation's specific mission to eradicate the social injustice, ill-health and misery caused by child poverty in Plymouth. It brings together the public, private and third sectors; acting in unison, we remain dedicated to making a difference throughout a young person's early life. The issue of children living in poverty in Plymouth is both significant and worsening. A child's life outcomes are wholly predictable depending on the ward they were born into. Today, some wards continue to experience levels of children living in poverty in excess of 35%. This cannot be right! The initiative focuses in 3 key areas which build self-esteem and experience to help determine and improve a young person's future:
Inspiration - helping children to see beyond their immediate world Aspiration - helping children to believe that they can achieve no matter what their background education - a toolkit of life skills. We need to break the generational poverty cycle
