On 18th September 2012, PC's Nicola Hughes (23yrs) and Fiona Bone (32yrs) left for work like any other day in Greater Manchester. THEY NEVER CAME HOME...... because later that morning they were both callously murdered by a male (I refuse to name him) with a handgun and grenade who purposely lured them to their death. Nicola and Fiona were doing what thousands of police officers do every day.... protecting the public from harm and trying to make the area that they were working in a safer place for everyone. This is what all emergency service personnel do every day...... in order to make our lives and the lives of our children better. Fortunately incidents like this are rare, I have in 21 years service, lost one colleague to a murderous crime, and that is one too many!!! Unfortunately with the modern world being what it is, there have been recent terror attacks in London and Manchester where police officers have lost their lives.... and this is because as times like that... police, firefighters and medical personnel invariably run towards the danger instead of away from it!! IT IS WHAT THEY DO!!!!
I vividly recall the scenes of PC Keith Palmer's funeral with the wreath saying "No 1 DAD" at the front of his hearse. His five year old daughter now has to live her life with only memories of her Dad.... and this shouldn't be the case, it will be no consolation to her that her Dad died a hero. I have children of a similar age and the thought of their faces if they were in a similar position is too chilling to dwell on.
Bryn Hughes is the Father of Nicola Hughes, and he has since her death, set up the charity in memory of his daughter, and to raise money for the benefit and support for the children of those emergency service personnel who leave for work and never come home!!
This year I have taken part in 100 days of consecutive running (minimum 2 miles per day) from April 15th. I have run daily through rain or shine, injuries and work and childcare commitments....... and on Sunday 23rd July I will run for the 100th day in a row, and also break the 300 mile barrier. This has been on the whole, an enjoyable and sometimes stressful challenge..... and I would love to raise just a pound for each mile I have covered to go towards this worthwhile cause, so if you can assist and help those youngsters who, through no fault of their own have lost a Mum or a Dad to a murderous act, then it will make those 5am alarm calls and early runs worthwhile!! There really is no substitute from coming home from work and seeing my children's smiling faces greet me.... lets help those children and young people who do not have that luxury!!
THANKS
