The Keep Me Close Appeal - providing a home from home experience for families of sick and premature babies requiring Neonatal Intensive Care.

Story

I'm raising money for the Keep Me Close Appeal. The care of extremely premature and sick babies turns families lives upside down. It is emotionally, physically and financially demanding, placing people under incredible pressure.

Sadly on the 21st April our Mum, our dads beloved wife sadly passed away at the age of 61.

In this time she watched all 9 of her children become adults  and welcomed many grandchildren into the family 3 of which needed the support of NICU at Derriford Hospital.

Our mum was the most loving, kindest person you could ever meet in your life. She adored children and loved nothing more than getting her knitting needles out to create beautiful little woolly warmers to keep the babies warm. She raised us to respect and love each other and we're hoping she would be looking down now with a proud look on her face as we all join together as one family unit to lean on each other for strength and guidance.

They say only the best are taken early and we can 100% say that she was the best mum and wife ever. She'll be spreading kindness and smiles to all who need it.

In her honour we would love donations to go to a worthwhile charity that meant something to mum and to us as a family.

Rest in peace mum, you're in the arms of the angels now. Your brain injury took your ability to walk but we know you are now dancing in the stars. Keep an eye on all the little angels up there and we're sure they'll all be snuggly warm with your knitting skills.

Give us a twirl Little Bear.

The best support we can give to parents is the freedom to stay near their newborn child. The Keep Me Close Appeal opened a home-from-home on 15 November 2019 for the families of babies who are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Derriford Hospital. It is nearby, it provides our families seven en-suite bedrooms, with a fully functioning kitchen, comfortable communal area and access to laundry facilities. To date (June 2020) we have been able to give 22 families 680 nights of accommodation at no additional cost to them or the hospital. We need to keep this going. They need £70,000 per year, or just £27.40/night/bedroom to allow peace of mind to parents who are under extreme stress. Thank you for being involved.
