Story

On September 1st 2022, DSP Psi Chapter will be joining the MACC Fund in kicking off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by going "Over the EDGE"! Our president Benjamin will be rappelling down the 147-ft tall, 10-story Wintrust Commercial Bank building in downtown, Milwaukee--all to raise money for childhood cancer and blood disorders research. The MACC Fund's mission is to find a cure for childhood cancer and blood disorders by providing funding for research. We are honored to support their mission by participating in the MACC Fund Goes Over the Edge event. Any donation, large or small, to our fundraising efforts is greatly appreciated. Every dollar makes a difference.

We are participating in this event to honor Charlie Burton. Charlie was an extraordinary brother of the Psi Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi (DSP) who passed away in December of 2019 following an 8-year battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma. Despite dealing with ongoing cancer treatments throughout college, Charlie was an honor roll student and was highly involved in the Psi Chapter, where he met a large part of his loyal and supportive friend group.

During his time in DSP, Charlie touched and inspired the chapter with his perseverance, generosity, kindness, and dedication. Always quick-witted and positive, Charlie provided Psi chapter with some of its most humorous moments, yet also its most heartfelt and honest as he was a constant advocate and role model for those battling cancer.

Recognized by his professors for his stellar academic performance, willingness to learn, and thoughtfulness inside and outside of the classroom, Charlie was awarded his degree posthumously in the Spring of 2020. In the words of Vallabh Sambamurthy, the Dean of the Wisconsin School of Business, “Charlie exhibited the best of what it means to be a Badger, and we know he’ll forever be part of our extended Badger family.”

A huge Badger sports fan, Charlie attended every Badger football and basketball game possible. He also had a passion for traveling, as he participated in a two-week exchange to Madrid in high school and then studied abroad in Seville during the spring semester of his Junior year. During his term in Seville, Charlie formed a special bond with the Justribo family, who held their own memorial service for him in Seville. To remember Charlie, the Burton family created a Youtube channel that includes many of the major highlights in Charlie’s life, including a video of that memorial service.

Charlie’s memory has carried on in the Psi Chapter and will for years to come. In Spring 2019, two (now-graduated) brothers, Nick Russo and Allan Moutvic organized the first “DSP Open” golf event for brothers to connect, compete, and fundraise for the MACC Fund, an organization that Charlie asked us to support because of the help it provided him throughout his childhood. When the event was started in 2019, a portion of the proceeds was donated to the MACC Fund at Charlie’s request. For the 2020 event (which was unfortunately unable to happen due to COVID-19), the golf outing was renamed to “The Charlie Burton Open” to honor Charlie’s impact on the Psi Chapter and to continue his legacy of generosity, and all proceeds were to be donated to the MACC Fund.

On behalf of the Psi Chapter, we greatly appreciate your generosity to help us honor Charlie and support the MACC Fund.
