Story

Thank you for visiting my ‘Operation Raleigh’ Just Giving page.

In June 2012 I will be setting off for Costa Rica and Nicaragua to work with the charity Raleigh International as a volunteer for 10 weeks. Raleigh International is a youth and education charity and has a permanent presence in four host countries where it has established long standing with government NGOs and local communities. It aims to give communities resources and motivation to achieve sustainable development and relies on volunteers to achieve this. Its long term approach allows truly worthwhile projects which are actually completed and with follow-up visits to ensure they are sustained.

Nicaragua is a poor country in the Americas: nearly half the population live below the poverty line.  In some remote areas, the only source of water is rivers which often dry up in the summer and come from polluted water sources. Costa Rica has high levels of biodiversity; however with the threat of deforestation, national parks and environmental initiatives are becoming more important.

There are three phases to the expedition: a community phase, an environmental phase and lastly an adventure phase which will seriously challenge my own growth and development!

As a volunteer on the community phase I will be working with the local population on projects such as damming streams and building water tanks or gravity feed systems, school houses or toilets–I won’t know exactly what until nearer the time.

Environmental work could involve building a bridge or a trail, or helping turtle conservation so my efforts would contribute towards the long term project.

The adventure phase is a three week trek probably at high altitude and through difficult terrain.

I need to fundraise £2995 all of which goes to Raleigh International to ensure their humanitarian work can continue and covers the cost of maintaining the permanent bases and the equipment for the projects.

I have many plans for fundraising, including a sponsored cycle ride, cake and jumble sales with many more ideas in the making!

Your donations will not be used for my personal expenses  (flights, equipment etc.) - I am covering this myself with my own money.

Thank you all for your support,

Lizzie
