We’re the UK’s leading charity for Crohn’s and Colitis. Right now, over 500,000 people in the UK are living with a lifelong disease that many people have never heard of. We’re working to improve diagnosis and treatment; to fund research and to raise awareness.

A very close family member of mine has lived with Crohn's disease for over twenty years now, whilst as a family we have managed to put a positive spin on the daily symptoms, it was very hard adapting in the early days of the diagnosis. To give a more accurate description of living with Crohn's, below is an account from my family member.

'Crohn’s Disease is one of the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Crohn’s is sometimes described as a chronic condition. Crohn’s is ongoing and life-long, although I do have periods of good health (remission) as well as times when symptoms are more active (relapses or flare-ups). In many people the disease runs a benign course with few flare-ups, while others may have more severe disease. Crohn’s Disease is not infectious and at present there is no cure for Crohn’s, but for me, taking medication on a daily basis can give long periods of relief from symptoms.

Over twenty years ago, talking about Crohn’s and the symptoms and finding out information was not easy, the only guidance I had
was a leaflet advising me to contact Crohn’s & Colitis UK.
The information and guidance at the time was a real eye opener, after trying to battle, deny and hide the symptoms, I learnt to be self-aware, to have respect for my body and to ask others to have respect for me and my needs – I live with Crohn’s as part of me and deal with it daily in a positive way.’

Thank you for supporting my family, and every one else suffering from Crohn's and Colitis.
