We raise funds for those who are homeless to provide support, training and employment

Story

I turned 50 in 2022 and decided I needed a challenge, something to focus on, something to achieve. The Covid pandemic and subsequent lockdowns meant my event catering business, Epicurus basically stopped trading for nearly two years.  To alleviate boredom, for exercise and to try and stay sane, I started running.  I loved it and found it great for my mental health so started entering races and running more.  I went from not being able to run 5K in Jan 2021 to running a 50k ultra by July 2021.  I then had the bonkers idea of competing in 5 ultra-marathons this year – one for each decade of my life!  Why ever not?

I am now competing in the following races this year:

April – The Isle of Arran Ultra Day 1 (30 miles)

April – The Isle of Arran Ultra Day 2 (30 miles)

June – The Montane Summer Spine Challenger (108 miles)

September – The Lap, Windermere (47 miles)

December – The Montane Cheviot Goat (55 miles)

I decided to raise some money for the charity, North East Homeless through these challenges.  NEH provides support to those vulnerable and/or homeless.  They provide food, equipment, training, support & employment.  They also provide a café and events space in North Shields known as The Fish Quay Hub.  Please visit their website (or better still pop in for a brew) www.northeasthomeless.org.uk

About the charity

In 2014, our founder, Brian Burridge, set up a Facebook group called North East Homeless. The group brought the North East community together to donate items such as sleeping bags, food, clothing, all in support of Homeless people in the Newcastle City Centre. North East Homeless became bigger than Brian imagined, the community spirit inspired him to formalise NEH and apply for Charity status. Then, in November 2016, North East Homeless became a CIO with the vision and direction of supporting people who are or have experienced Homelessness and/or Poverty.
