Story

#GuideDogs90

On October 6th 2021, Guide Dogs UK officially turned 90.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, I decided I would aim to produce 90 paintings in support of Guide Dogs UK between now and the end of 2022.

I'm pleased to announce that one year from announcing this challenge, I have successfully produced 90 paintings ...and I'm not quite done yet!

Stay tuned for a further announcement!

Hello, my name is Alex Devlin.

I'm an artist from Ware, Hertfordshire with a Masters Degree in Fine Art. I'm also severely visually impaired.

My eye condition is called Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) - it means I have decreased vision in low light environments and a loss of my peripheral vision.

Despite progress being made in understanding of the genes surrounding RP, there is currently no cure or treatment that can slow down or stop RP from getting worse.

Thankfully, my condition is currently stable, but it also means that one day I may lose my vision.

Guide Dogs UK is a charity that is very close to my heart - in my spare time, I am a fundraising volunteer for the Ware and Hertford Fundraising Group.

Guide Dogs is all about helping those with sight loss live the life they choose.

If you would like to show your support, please consider making a donation via my JustGiving page and sharing my work.

Please donate whatever you are comfortable with and do not donate more than you can easily afford.

It should go without saying that Guide Dogs are expensive to train but every £ donated makes an impact:

  • £3 could pay for a microchip for a new guide dog puppies
  • £8 could support a working guide dog partnership for a day
  • £16 could buy a coat for a puppy in training
  • £25 could pay for an hour's training for a guide dog
  • £27 could cover the cost of a visit to the vet
  • £50 could buy a Puppy Raising Kit for the volunteers who look after the puppies during their first year

Guide Dogs are also experts in supporting people with sight loss without dogs - with a range of services including large print books for children (CustomEyes) and sighted guiding services (My Guide).

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page - I hope you will consider supporting my fundraising project.
