Story
Supporting children with Dyspraxia and Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD) is very important to me and something I studied for my dissertation when training to be a primary school teacher and continued with for my PGCE.
Throughout my career as a primary school teacher I supported children with co-ordination difficulties through running my 'Esteem Club' at what was Henlow Middle School, in Bedfordshire, for 6 years. I went on to train and support other primary school teachers in many schools in Bedfordshire and Derbyshire to raise the awareness of children with motor co-ordination difficulties and how schools can support them.
I also worked with nurseries and schools as a freelance consultant for several years and created and wrote resources to help parents, early years providers and teachers know how to encourage and improve babies and children's physical development.
I now run my own Pilates business, which is of course, also focuses on improving movement, co-ordination and strength. In my opinion, the movement programmes that can support children with DCD are based on the same principles as Pilates.
Children's movement is vital for them to be able to lead an active, healthy life and has such a huge impact on their academic, social and emotional development that I'd like to continue to support the Dyspraxia Foundation raise awareness and help children, families, medical and educational professions.
