Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Hi, my name is Gill White. When lockdown was announced in March 2020, our much-loved church, like everything else, was closed. At the time we were busy rehearsing the Easter Story we perform in church annually for all our local Primary schools. Performances had to be cancelled, everything came to a halt, and suddenly we all found ourselves isolated in our own homes.

I decided to begin phoning our elderly parishioners to check on their wellbeing. We would talk as I walked around the country lanes, getting my daily exercise during lockdown. Over the weeks and months that have followed, they've shared so many memories with me and it's truly been a privilege getting to know them all so well. As our talks lengthened, so did my walks, and I decided to start this Walking Challenge in aid of St Mary's Church, Haverfordwest. I've been walking every day, whatever the weather, and my aim is to have walked 3000 miles between March 2020 and Easter this year.

I still have 200 miles to go to reach my 3000 mile target.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin has stood as a beacon in the centre of Haverfordwest for nearly 900 years and is of huge historical importance. It not only serves the town as the Civic Church, but is an important venue for local choirs, schools and groups. We are a very busy and active church at the heart of the community, but due to Covid, we've been unable to raise funds in our normal ways, such as holding concerts, recitals and flower festivals.

Financially the church is in an extremely precarious position. Any contribution, however small, would be hugely appreciated.

About the charity

For nearly 900 years the church of St Mary the Virgin has been at the centre of the community of Haverfordwest. Imposingly set overlooking the town’s High Street, it is Grade One listed. Its fine early arches, medieval carvings, Tudor panelled oak roof, historic organ and peal of eight bells, together with many other outstanding features, make it one of Wales’ finest parish churches. As the town’s Civic Church, we welcome the opportunity to work with the Town Council and many local organisations. We serve a broad mix of people from our area, as members of our congregation, visitors, those attending concerts or civic events and those who come for baptisms, weddings and funerals. In recent years we have extended our outreach to all primary schools in the town, performing annually The Easter Story and Christmas Story for them in the church. Our fundraising events include an annual Flower Festival, History Weeks and Friday Lunchtime events (talks, concerts, social gatherings). The church’s fine acoustics and large space are appreciated by choirs, soloists and other musical groups who use it for rehearsals and concerts. It costs up to £6,000 per month to keep St Mary’s Church open. We hope you will be able to support us.
