In the autumn of 2018, our gorgeous friend Kara, who is the same age as Dexter, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Since then, she has undergone intensive treatment on the Starlight Ward at Bristol Children’s Hospital.
As friends and family, we are so lucky that this amazing hospital, which has become Kara’s home over the past six months of treatment, is on our doorstep. We have been able to support the family, visit, cook meals and much more.
Bristol Children’s Hospital treats patients from across the country, all the way down to Land’s End. When each of our own three children have needed the support of the hospital, we have been able to be admitted within minutes of leaving our home. Not all families treated here are that lucky.
Kara, her mum and her family continue to inspire me on a daily basis with the amazing attitude they take towards her treatment. As friends there is a sense of helplessness when a dear friend is going through such a challenge. So I decided to fundraise as much as I can for the Hospital by setting myself a serious challenge!! So I will be cycling from the far reaches of the hospital’s catchment, Land’s End, back up to Bristol in September this year.
Please dig deep - it’s a stretching target but one I am committed to achieving with your help! I’ll get the saddle sores, you just need to clock up the dosh! My fundraising will be split, 50% to wherever the hospital needs it most, and 50% direct to Starlight Ward, which cares for oncology patients like Kara.
