During November 2017, a week before her first birthday, Lily-May Betts was found to have an extremely rare type of tumour in her brain. She was diagnosed with an optic pathway glioma and subsequent diencephalic syndrome. Weeks of tests, scans and diagnosis at Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children followed before starting a course of intensive chemotherapy treatment. Lily's treatment is very tough on such a young child but she copes amazingly, her big beaming smile always shining through despite everything she's enduring.
Great Ormond Street Hospital has provided the expertise and quality of care that gives Lily a chance of positive long term prognosis and minimising the disabling effects of her tumour. Their care and support for both Lily and her parents has been fantastic.
GTK have put together a team including Lily's grandfather to cycle from London to Brighton in September 2018, raising funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital, which relies on the generosity of donations and volunteers to provide a superb level of care for Lily and many children like her. Every day, over 600 children and young people from across the UK arrive. Every day, doctors and nurses battle the most complex illnesses, and the brightest minds come together to achieve pioneering medical breakthroughs. And every day is a chance for you to make a difference. This extraordinary hospital has always depended on charitable support to give seriously ill children the best chance to fulfil their potential.
