Alder Hey 10k & 5k Fun Run · 3 April 2022 ·

The Alder Hey Childrens Charity 5k at Haydock Park Racecourse will see participants take in a location with fantastic history and a completely enclosed facility.

Story

Harry was diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hips (DDH, also known as clicky hips) at 16 months old. At 21 months he underwent open reduction surgery with a Salter's Osteotomy under general anaesthetic at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital to reconfigure his hip joint. This involved removing a section of bone from the top of his pelvis and inserting it into an incision part way down to create a better shaped socket for his under-developed hip. Pins were put in to keep everything in place and he was then put into a full hip spica cast for 10 weeks, meaning he couldn't walk or move around. Harry spent 4 days post-op in Alder Hey on the ward under the care of their incredible staff, and returned 10 months later on a Day Admission to have the pins removed. Now, at 10 years old and many check ups later, both hips work perfectly and we wanted to give something back to this wonderful hospital for everything they have done for Harry, because every single member of the Alder Hey team that we have met along the way has been absolutely amazing - from the surgeon who conducted the operation and sees Harry regularly to check his progress, to the anaesthetist who reassured me and told me what to expect as I held his hand while they put him under, to the doctors and nurses on the ward, to the admin and receptionists who greet us every time we go for an appointment, to the staff in the cafe who have nothing but smiles and every other person who makes Alder Hey so fabulous.

So Harry will be taking part in the charity fun run, running 5k at Haydock racecourse on Sunday 3rd April to raise funds for this fantastic cause. Every single contribution helps, no matter how large or small, so thank you in advance for reading this far!
