Story

My dad passed away early in January 2017 due to hepatocellular carcinoma and carcinomatosis - in English that means liver cancer which then spread throughout his body. He'd previously had small tumour removed a few years prior, but about a week before his 55th birthday in August 2016 he received a terminal diagnosis. The initial prognosis was that he "would be lucky to see Christmas".

He decided to spend his last days at home rather than at hospital. St David's Hospice Care provided a tremendous amount of support to both my father and my family. They provided visits from a palliative care nurse twice a week, overnight nurse stays, and towards the end of his life provided a syringe driver to administer drugs constantly. Their help offered my family an incredible amount of comfort and support. Their nurses provided much needed advice and support, and the overnight visits allowed my mother some brief moments of sleep. The syringe driver they provided allowed pain relief drugs to be administered constantly, allowing my dad some comfort in the last few weeks of his life.

I cannot adequately describe how grateful I am to St David's Hospice Care. I want to help them continue to provide the kind of care and support that they did for both my father and my family in any way I can. With our donations we can make that happen.

Here is a small showcase of the difference our donations can make:

  • £20 could pay for a Hospice at Home Nurse to care for someone in their own home for one hour, giving the care they so desperately need at the end of their life.
  • £25 pays for a session with one of our Welfare Rights Advisers, helping patients who may have queries regarding availability of benefits
  • £30 would buy 2 therapy music CDs for patients
  • £160 could pay for a Hospice at Home Nurse to stay with a patient overnight and provide the care they need in their own home surrounded by loved ones.
  • £200 pays for a Clinical Nurse Specialist to visit a patient and their family twice in a week to help stabilise their symptoms.
  • £1000 pays for a new syringe driver for use by our patients when they need it most
