Story

On 5 September I turn the ”Big 4 0”!

I’m not particularly looking forward to reaching this milestone, it has to be said! I am, however, very lucky to be here to celebrate.

For those of you who don’t know, I was born ten weeks premature in September 1978, weighing in at just under 3lbs. Back in those days neo-natal care was not as advanced as it is now and it was only because of the skill, dedication and care of the doctors and nurses at the neo-natal unit at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital that I am here today. They looked after me so well for 12 long weeks during which time I scared everyone by developing meningitis at 9 days old and my weight dropping to just over 2lbs.

My parents and I are forever indebted to the team that saved me and I want to try and give something back to the neo-natal unit by raising some funds for “Friends of the Special Nursery” (run by The Archie Foundation) which is the official charity of Aberdeen Maternity Hospital’s Neo-Natal Unit for premature and sick babies.

I have decided to, literally, take the plunge and I am going to be abseiling down the ArcelorMittal Orbit in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London on Saturday 1 September. The Orbit is the UK’s tallest sculpture (22 metres taller than The Statue of Liberty) and is the UK’s highest FREE FALL abseil (80 metres!)

I would really appreciate any support you can give. All funds raised will go towards providing extras needed by the current Special Care Baby Unit.

Now to try and get over my fear of heights before the big day..............
