Helping children with mental illness and disabilities in Essex.

On August 10th, 25 of my colleagues, friends and family, will be completing the 50k Bronze Challenge, hiking in the Peak District. Our target is to raise £5000 for an Essex based charity SNAP based in Brentwood. The people at SNAP have supported over 5000 families who have children with mental illness and disabilities all across Essex and beyond. We chose SNAP as our charity to sponsor as they are an independent charity driven by a group of people that have had their own challenges with mental health and disabilities in their own families and empower parents and carers to grow in strength and knowledge so they are better equipped to give the best possible help to their children. It’s a powerful cause and one we are proud to be sponsoring.

More about SNAP

SNAP helps every family at absolutely no cost and no diagnosis.  But because of that, they also need OUR HELP – YOUR HELP to support and help them running the SNAP Centre. I was totally overwhelmed by the amount of families SNAP has helped over the years and the continual improvements they have made to the facility and their equipment that includes a sensory room, a library full of books for children and parents that are safe and not scary to read unlike some things you can find on google! An IT room with iPads & computers which the kids absolutely love AND! break out areas for families to see counsellors 1 to 1. You can clearly see the positive impact this centre is having with the children and their families.

This year SNAP charity celebrates their 25th anniversary! From humble beginnings,  8 parents with children with mental health form their own support network group, to securing a rundown building in Brentwood which needed£500,000 to refurbish, winning the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award, building a £30,000 sensory room to winning Best-Not-For-Profit Organisation of the Year 2018! In 2019 SNAP are supporting 2500 active familiesthat use the facilities and support lines to help them with their children. What an amazing story!

You can make a difference by donating, all proceeds go directly to SNAP. Let’s make sure they receive an awesome birthday gift from our community, so that they can celebrate many times more! 🙂

Peak District Bronze Challenge – 50k Hike

On 10th August, our merry band of 25 misfits will be hiking across the glorious Peak District completing the 50k Bronze Challenge hike in 12 hours. We will be camping the night before close to the trial start and setting off at 0730. Our target is to self-navigate across the Derbyshire Dales nature reserve up to Middleton Moor. From there we will be taking in the beauty of the Peak District before climbing Curbar and Froggatts Edge which will take us to an altitude of 462 meters. Finally, we will reach Grindleford where we will join the Derwent Valley Heritage trial back towards Hathersgate.  Will we return within the 12-hour limit? We will have a drone to film us on the route! Make sure you keep an eye on the socials and the website for the video. We will try and live stream as much of the trial assuming we have signal and you will be able to follow our progress on Facebook and Instagram, make sure you follow us!

Training for the hike

We have no illusions this is going to be a walk in the park (no pun intended :p) 50 kilometres works out to roughly 31 miles and when we researched the route in dawned on us how far 50 kilometres is! But what a challenge right? The next step was to put together some sort of training and health programme – Personally, I have been going to the gym training my legs with weights whilst doing some cardio. And doing some walking outside to get used to the terrain. Some of the participants have been doing various activities including Cross Fit, Cycling, Running and Swimming. Mostly it will be the endurance that will be most difficult on the day. Not to mention the blisters and rubbing of clothes on skin! One thing that I have been doing well whilst training is eating healthy. I am trying to eat a plant-based diet where possible with lots of veggies, rice, beans, quinoa, sweet potato and lentils, lots of good protein and energy in these little guys – highly recommended! Have I had some cheat days? Absolutely. But overall, I am on the straight and narrow with this and focusing on the challenge ahead.

We are going to be doing some taster hikes around Essex in the next few weeks including Epping Forest. Its all about preparation!

Other fundraisers we have done

The Stuart Feakins Trust – 24 Hour Gaming Challenge  HTTPS://WWW.TOTALGIVING.CO.UK/APPEAL/THESTUARTFEAKINSTRUST

Last year, we were fundraising for The Stuart Feakins Trust that work with young people in London to enable them to experience new things, define their aspirations and help give them the tools to achieve them.

We also accomplished the Christmas Gifts For The Kids fundraising campaign for Basildon Hospital’s charity - POLLY PARROT CHILDRENS APPEAL – BASILDON AND THURROCK HOSPITALS CHARITY raising over £2500 towards gifts for children who were unfortunate to spend their festive season in the hospital. Both of these causes are fantastic for the local community and we sometimes take the NHS for granted, these guys do a FANTASTIC job and especially Basildon Hospital in their Children's Ward, we cannot commend these guys and girls that work there enough! No child should have to spend their Christmas Day in hospital, but these people make it a caring, fun and safe place to be. Keep up the great work guys!
