The London Marathon and the Stones Ultra Marathon · 22 April 2018

Story

A mid-life crisis fuelled by alcohol, bravado and stupidity is a dangerous cocktail. One sip too much has found me attempting to run the distance of Land’s End to John 0’Groats and back. This is 1,206 miles and is split into a half marathon, a full Marathon (London - next w/e) and an ultra-marathon along with all the associated training.

The ultra-marathon is without question the most challenging. It entails two marathons ‘back to back’ and then another 9 miles on top. (100km = just over 62 miles) Added to which this is on difficult terrain and also up and down hills.

In attempting this, I want to raise money for something I know to be hugely worthwhile. Depression is a terrifying illness that comes in many guises. It is also an illness that I sadly know too much about as I am a sufferer. Indeed, it is said to darken one in four people's lives at some point. Of these sufferers 15% actually kill themselves. A figure you can help reduce.

There are two charities that I am supporting. One conducts a lot of research into depression (Warwick University) and the other increases the awareness of the signs and dangers of depression as well as providing encouragement of those who maybe depressed to seek help. (Charlie Waller Memorial Trust)

Unlike large charities with significant administrative expenses, any donation, no matter how big or small, will go directly into these
endeavours.

I hope you will contribute. I will update you with the gory details after the event.
