Approximately three people every day have an accident or injury that results in permanent paralysis through damage to the spinal cord. There is no cure. Paralysis is permanent.
Over 40,000 people in the UK have a spinal cord injury (SCI), the majority of whom use a wheelchair. However, in cases where the injury is incomplete it may be possible to walk. The Back-Up Trust's services are for everyone affected by spinal cord injury, including families and friends.
Back-Up is a small, dynamic and professional charity that runs three distinct services: wheelchair skills, mentoring and rehabilitative activity or cultural courses. These services are peer-led and encourage independence, self-confidence and motivation following a life changing injury.
On the 10th July 2010 I am participating in an event called the Helvellyn push. It essentially involves pulling and pushing a paraplegic spinal patient, in his wheelchair, up a 3,100ft mountain. This as you may imagine will be a difficult and physically challenging task for both the group assisting and the paraplegic participating, Danny Turnbull.
The push is in aid of the charity, Back-Up, and I would very much appreciate any donations of sponsership that you are able to provide. No donation is too big or too small and all the proceeds will help a fantastic cause in the spinal injury community.
Many Thanks and I really appreciate your help,
Ian Benson
