We want to create safe spaces to value lives impacted by suicide

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On the 13th June 2022 our previous Director, Professor John Gibson, sets off with his wife Isobel, on the 1200 mile walk from  Land’s End to John O’Groats.  They aim to raise donations for their new charity, The Canmore Trust, which was set up in memory of their son Cameron Gibson.  The trust aims to better understand what lies at the heart of mental, physical and societal safe spaces, ensuring that these are available to anyone affected by suicidal distress.

Suicide Awareness | The Canmore Trust

Staff and Students at the Institute of Dentistry plan to get involved with John & Isobel's amazing venture with a number of events aimed at raising donations for the Charity. This will hopefully culminate with us joining John and Isobel on one of the stages of the walk in late August 2022.

About John, Isobel, Cameron and The Canmore Trust

In October 2019 Cameron died by suicide.  The resultant carnage for John and his family  has changed their lives forever with so many questions: What is suicide?  Why their family?  Why did Cameron, a seemingly happy and contented young man in a loving family, with everything to live for, decide that this world was no longer a place he wanted to be?

John is now a facilitator with the Edinburgh Group of Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS) and spends much of his time in the suicide community - walking and talking with those impacted by suicide. The Gibson family have started a new charity – The Canmore
Trust - to develop the concept of “safe spaces” in suicide prevention and postvention (thecanmoretrust.co.uk).  Such safe spaces might be found inside our minds, our school classrooms, our workplaces and our homes.  John is opening up conversations across the UK, emphasising that, with 17 suicides each day in the UK, suicide can happen to any family or community and so suicide is everyone’s business.  He believes that our educational system requires open discussion on suicide and how we equip our young people with the
skills to develop a “suicide safety plan”.
