Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

This autumn, my colleague Professor Stephen Hughes (Principal Research Fellow BCUHB and Scientific Director North Wales and North West Urological Research Centre) and I, will be running the Cardiff 1/2 Marathon.

Our training for this event has already started, and you can read more about how our training is going via this page and our website, www.nw2urc.com.

We are hoping to raise as much money along the way to help with the development of the North Wales Clinical Research Centre (NWCRC), which will be based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, North Wales. This new research centre is fully supported by Besti Cadwaladr University Health Board, and will be up and running from December 2017. It will provide a world class facility for clinicians, nurses and scientists to undertake research into conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and neuro-degenerative disorders (e.g. dementia).

The number of people diagnosed with disorders, such as prostate and bladder cancers, diabetes, dementia and cardiovascular disease is worryingly high in North Wales and the North West of England. Studies to be undertaken at the North Wales Clinical Research Centre promises to benefit patients (regionally and nationally), in that their local hospitals and health board is undertaking novel and potentially ground-breaking clinical research, which will ultimately allow current NHS care protocols to be revised and improved; thus improving the patients’ health and well-being.

Monies raised for this worthwhile cause will be done via your donations to Awyr Las (Fund: 7N34).

Thank you for all your help and support!

Best wishes

Professor Iqbal Shergill and Professor Stephen Hughes
