Story

Hi everyone,

My name is Ian Purcell and I am a Physical Therapist & ITU Level 2 Triathlon Coach based in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, Ireland.

I've created this page along with my friend & Chairman of Clonmel Tri Club, Kevin Ryan because we want to make a difference. We're inspired by the work of CMRF and we want to support them by doing an Iron Distance Triathlon on the 3rd May.

We, along with thousands of other Irish families, have experienced Crumlin Children's Hospital at first hand over the last few months and are forever in their debt for the trojan and inspirational work they do every day.

Please help us help them by giving whatever you can using the 'Donate' button. The more people that know about CMRF, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing our page with your friends and family.

At the moment, they have an urgent appeal to support their front line medical teams and staff across Crumlin Hospital during this Covid-19 crisis.

Our aim is to raise at least €10,000 for them by doing an indoor Ironman Triathlon.

We'll be doing the following bike and run separately in separate houses at different times

For the 3.8km swim, we'll do it in our co-owned Endless pool.(Endless Pool is basically like a treadmill for swimming where one can swim against a variable speed current)

For the 180km bike ride I'll use my Wattbike Atom with Zwift while Kevin will use a smart direct drive turbo trainer with Zwift.

For the 42.2km marathon, we'll use treadmills with Zwift.

This indoor Iron Distance Triathlon will take us each approx 11 to 13 hours. It's 226.3kms (140.6 miles) for us each in total and we will stick rigidly to the Government's guidelines on social distancing.

We'll show the event live from 5:15am on FB live (if our phones let us!)..what could be more exciting than seeing two guys in their late late 30's swim, bike and run that distance painfully slowly??

Kev starts the swim first at 5:30am and then I go at 7:00am once he is finished and the entire area has been disinfected.

So far, 53 of my clients have committed to doing parts of the bike and run with us but we would love as many people as possible to join us virtually for parts of the bike and run, even if its just a few minutes!

We are both experienced Iron Distance triathletes (Kevin is the current Clonmel Tri Club chairman & completed the Hardman Iron Distance race last august with a broken arm) but we've never done one quite like this before and we have zero long distance training done this year.
We know though that we can do it through sheer will and stubbornness alone and there's no greater motivation than this.

We would like to heighten awareness on social and mainstream media, and to get as many people as possible cycling and running with us virtually on Zwift or outside on their 2km radius loop on Facebook live during the event.

We would love your support and promotion on this if possible in any way. Get the family & friends involved! Run a few laps of your garden!

Please tag CMRF Crumlin and ourselves in any social media post, use #ironman4crumlin, and follow us for updates:
