It helps the relief of deaf people in Tanzania. Currently it is working with two organisations, Buguruni School for the Deaf, a primary school and UMIVITA, a small NGO, run by young deaf adults which provides advocacy and support services to deaf people in Dar es Salaam

Story

Hello, Bonjour, Guten Tag etc.

Happy New Year to all of you!

We, Catriona and Sarah Macleod, have somehow been persuaded to sign up to the ‘teeny weeny’ Paris half marathon by our ‘Forest Gump’ dad Ian Macleod, who insists on accompanying us. On the 2nd of March we will therefore hopefully complete the 21km course within our target time of 1h50 minutes.

We are doing this not just to atone for our many sins, but to raise money for a great cause run by friends of ours; Tanzanear. Tanzanear is a small UK charity with a big heart, dedicated to helping deaf children and young adults in Tanzania lead richer and more fulfilling lives. They currently do this by supporting Buguruni School for the Deaf, a primary school for up to 300 very poor deaf children in Dar es Salaam.  Tanzanear works closely with the Tanzania Society for the Deaf, the NGO which owns Buguruni School.

In the past, Tanzanear has raised money for mosquito nets and fumigation to eradicate malaria, refurbished the dormitories and the dining hall, updated the electricity supply, reconnected mains water and set up a Child Sponsorship Scheme for the very poorest children.

The Charity’s immediate plan is to help Buguruni School for the Deaf become a Centre of Excellence for deaf children and a facility to reach out into the deaf community to provide support diagnosis and on-going care. To achieve this, they have begun a staged programme both to create a specialist audiology centre as well as to refurbish the classrooms throughout the school.

If you can spare some cash to sponsor us on this endeavour we would be so grateful, as would be so many kids in Tanzania.
