Story
I am raising money for Surrey Search and Rescue Lowland team. I have been a volunteer team member for 9 years in this amazing team. We are on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year. We have foot, K9, water & drone teams & are all volunteers most of us working full time in our own jobs. But, when that call comes out from the police for a missing vulnerable person we all respond, helping to find missing individuals.
I am taking on the challenge of walking from Lands End to John O'Groats with my very lovely friend Debbie Wilkes, we are both into our 60s. We have known each other for 14 years & taken on a number of sporting challenges together. Mainly me suggesting some mad idea & Deb thinking it's a good idea at the time. I will be taking 3 months unpaid leave from my job at St Thomas' Hospital, so there will be no extra for luxuries.
LeJog is something I have wanted to do for many years, it is now coming to fruition. A dream you dream alone is a dream. A dream you dream you dream together is reality. We are starting May 18th from Lands End in Cornwall & plan to finish 3 months later, walking to John O'Groats in Scotland. The distance is approximately 1200 miles depending on our route as we go.
We carry our own packs of about 20lb each, will be carrying our tents & all our personal equipment which is pared down to the very bare necessities. Wild camping 90% of the route, washing in any available types of water, swimming in rivers, sea or anything looking safe, filtering our water to drink & cooking on tiny stoves, sleeping on our very minimal mats.
The scenery, weather, bodies, lack of food & navigation will all be testing & challenging day to day. But we aim to stay off roads as much as possible, eat where we can, sleep where feels safe, enjoy some very stunning countryside, embrace the British weather, stay in the odd bunk house, youth hostel or any kind persons offer & of course, retain the wonderful friendship & truly, have fun.
All of the above is so relevant to everything we do in search & rescue, working as a team, planning, the unexpected, the fun, the outdoors and of course, embracing the British weather.
Nothing exciting ever comes out of doing something comfortable.
