Story
Over the last 5 years, the number of people living in modern slavery globally has increased dramatically to 50 million (ILO, 2022). In Cambodia alone, an estimated 256 800 people live in modern slavery (The Global Slavery Index, 2016). Most people living in modern slavery are trapped in forced labour and/or forced marriage.
Chab Dai has been working for more than a decade toward ending all forms of abuse and modern slavery globally, particularly focussing their work on Cambodia.
Both Cambodia and Chab Dai hold great significance in my life. I was fortunate to be able to spend almost a year in Cambodia, being welcomed there, making friends, and learning about the country's rich history and culture.
However, only through working as an intern at Chab Dai in 2021 did I learn about the impact of modern slavery in Cambodia and, more importantly, how it can be addressed.
Chab Dai tackles the issue of modern slavery and human trafficking on all levels from fostering a global movement to supporting individual survivors.
- Globally, Chab Dai is helping to build capacities in other anti-modern-slavery organisations by facilitating education, training and networking opportunities.
- On a national level, Chab Dai is working with local authorities in Cambodia, e.g. by running workshops, to improve the government and police response to trafficking cases
- In Cambodian communities, Chab Dai raises awareness and educates community leaders
- Chab Dai also supports survivors of modern slavery, working to bring them home, and offering them free legal support
Join me in supporting Chab Dai to make a real difference to survivors' lives and communities at risk in Cambodia.
