Story

Hello! My name's James and I hate having to raise money for charity: I'd much rather we had democratic socialism. But until people like Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos are lined up against the wall, it's up to us common people to raise money for important causes.

My beloved grandma, Carmel Walsh, died last month, after suffering from Alzheimer's in her later years. My grandad, James "Jim" Walsh, also lived with it before his death in 2008. As anyone who has been around a loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia knows, it's a really cruel disorder, and until the revolution comes or we at least start funding public services properly we desperately need organisations like Alzheimer's Society to do the work supporting and advocating for people with the condition.

People who know me well know I can be a bit cynical about charity fundraising, particularly if it's to allow someone to do something that looks mega. Two weeks walking the great wall of China? Sounds amazing! Cycling from London to Paris? Yes please, don't mind if I do! It seems wrong to ask for money in order to do things that are quite clearly going to be a lot of fun.

This is why I, in contrast, have decided to swim two miles in the blimmin' Serpentine in late September. I will not enjoy it, and I am asking for you to give generously specifically so that I will know that my horrible experience will not have been for nothing.

It was either this or sitting in a tin bath full of beans for a week..

Thank you for reading, sorry about all the communism, and please give generously!
