Story
I'm running the London Marathon in October for Music in Hospitals & Care because I want more people in the UK to be able to benefit from the healing power of music. After witnessing firsthand the incredibly positive effect music can have on a person's quality of life with my Grandad, who suffered from Alzheimer's Disease in the last few years of his life, I knew this charity was the one I had to run for.
Music in Hospital & Care's professional musicians work with over 100,000 children and adults across the UK each year, including premature babies in intensive care units, the older generation living with dementia in care homes and those suffering with mental health problems through specially-created live music experiences.
Studies have shown that live music can improve mental, physical and emotional health. I graduated with a music degree from the University of Birmingham in 2020, where I wrote my final dissertation on the effects of musical memory and whether it can be spared in Alzheimer's Disease. The results, showing that where other types of memory often rapidly deteriorate, musical memory can remain somewhat intact, proved to me how powerful and important music can be for those who are suffering from memory loss.
Any support you can give, whether in the form of a donation or helping to spread the word would be hugely appreciated - thank you!
