Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my Just Giving Page!

Cancer is the UK's number 1 killer. One in three people will develop the disease in their lifetime.

My granddad died of cancer three years ago at the age of 76. I watched him suffer in the last year of his life. He had a wonderful family and an amazing full life. It is the mission of the Institute of Cancer Research to make the discoveries that defeat cancer. I believe this is a wonderful cause and it would  be an honour, if the money I raised by taking on one of World's biggest running challenges, the London Marathon, to make a difference and to help stop anyone suffering from this awful disease. Cancer can affect anyone at any age and it’s a terrifying statistic that one in three of us will be affected by cancer at some point of there lives.

The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is one of the world's most influential cancer research institutes with an outstanding record of achievement which dates back more than 100 years. Their scientists and clinicians are working everyday to make a real impact on cancer patients' lives. The ICR provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a generic disease. Today, the ICR lead the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment.

What their research costs:

£15 is the amount it costs them to extract DNA from a single sample.

£21 could provide a single lab with power for one week.

£50 covers the cost of their daily lab essentials including gloves, glass and plastic ware.

£100 buys a simple pipette, used to transfer small volumes of liquids between containers.

£500 buys a liquid nitrogen tank, used to store tumour and blood samples.

£1,000 pays for a microarray experiment to analyse the difference in gene expression patterns between five cancer and five normal patient tissue samples.

Please donate whatever you can. This is an amazing cause as they are dedicated to making the discoveries that defeat cancer.
