We Help people affected by artificial light to Improve their health and wellbeing

Story

We are walking the Dales way in July to raise money for the charity LightAware (Eleanor and John and some of our trustees and supporters are in the photograph above). The Dales way extends for 90 miles between Ilkley and Bowness on Windemere.

Lighting technology has changed dramatically in recent years with the development of modern fluorescent and LED lights, and the ban on incandescent light bulbs. LightAware receives personal accounts from around the world telling us that people are experiencing pain and ill health when exposed to fluorescent and LED lighting. Conditions that can be affected include migraine, autism and lupus. Symptoms including eye pain, headaches and migraines, skin rashes, burning, dizziness and nausea. The spread of new lighting has resulted in the social exclusion of light-sensitive people, who are unable to access many places of employment, recreation, education and health. The problem is exacerbated by a lack of awareness and information.

Like many accessibility issues, attitude and understanding make a big difference. LightAware wants to enable access to civic life by encouraging service providers and businesses to become ‘LightAware’.

LightAware believes no-one should have to experience pain and suffering just to light their homes and live their lives.

LightAware's Charitable Objectives

  • To raise awareness about the effects of artificial lighting on human health and wellbeing.
  • To stimulate discussion and investigation into the effects of artificial lighting on human health and wellbeing.
  • The promotion of equality and diversity through encouraging provision of access to civic life for those excluded by sensitivity to artificial lighting.
