Story
Millions of people across the world suffer from mental health problems. I'm running a marathon in November, in Athens, to raise money for MIND. It's not just about the money though. I am desperate to raise awareness and contribute to breaking the stigma around talking about mental health. Years ago, I'd not have publicly admitted to my own struggles, and though the world is changing for the better in this regard, we've a long way to go; this is my tiny contribution.
Running has become as much a part of my own personal battle with depression, and anxiety, as the medication and structured therapy I continue to receive. So, I thought, why not use it as the vehicle to make a difference, however small that might be?
I've not picked an easy one. The course is based on the legend from which the race gained it's name, and is arguably the most difficult in the world, with a consistent ascent between the 10-31km marks.
There is some selfishness in play here too, and it'd be remiss of me not to mention it. With such a penchant for history, I have always wanted to visit Athens. I'm also looking to kick-on with weight loss and drop another couple of stone over summer. Rest assured though, all the money I raise through donations will go to MIND, and I am self-funding the trip and associated fees.
Any donation to my cause, however small, is sincerely gratefully received. I will put my heart and soul into this.
