The Bats in Churches Project

Josie Wall is raising money for Bat Conservation Trust

4th Annual Bat Challenge · 31 October 2022

We are here to help communities, churches and their bats live in harmony. With your help, we can build a sustainable network of much-needed support for church communities and the bats they live with.

Story

I skipped 2021 because I didn't think I could do it justice but I'm back with my annual bat challenge for the 4th time in 2022.

Every October I wear Halloween themed outfits every day for the whole month as a fun challenge to raise awareness and funds for Bat Conservation Trust.

It is estimated that over half of our historic churches are home to bats, but this number is likely to be even higher in some areas! Most British bat species find sanctuary in the quiet, tight spaces of old, undeveloped buildings like churches that are peppered with holes in the stonework and timber. In small numbers bats often go unnoticed, but when they roost in large numbers a conflict can arise between the wildlife, the church community, and the priceless artefacts housed inside. The Bats in Churches project is working closely with over 100 churches to trial new ways for bats and humans to share the same space harmoniously. Our project is already 75% funded by the wonderful National Lottery Heritage Fund, hurrah, so were only asking you to help us make up the last quarter by donating what you can. Every donation, big or small makes a difference. Please donate.
