1 in 5 children in the UK are affected by their parents' alcohol problems. They are often frightened and isolated, with no one to turn to for help. Nacoa responds by providing a free, confidential telephone, 1-2-1 chat and email helpline.

Story

So here we go again, a new page for a new challenge!

I know I have not long finished a fundraising page so this time I am not setting my target too high but if anyone should wish to donate, anything at all will make a difference. I know it's a lot to ask and am incredibly grateful for all the support I had last time but this is also very much about raising awareness for the charity so children, young people, adults, whoever may be affected by alcoholism in the family can get the support they need through Nacoa.

Finding Nacoa and feeling a part of their team, meeting like minded people who have all lived with the effects of alcoholism within the family has been a life changing experience for me. Knowing that I am not alone & am able to share my past with people who completely understand just how lonely being a child of an alcoholic can really be has given me the confidence again that I lost a very long time ago.

As of today, 1st October 2019 I will be walking 1 million steps. This is a challenge that I am doing with 10 other ladies from around the country and am so excited to be a part of. We are due to complete our steps by 1st January 2020 which means in total between us all we would have walked 10 million steps! That is the equivalent of 500 miles each with any money raised going directly to Nacoa  so they can continue to do the great work they do and be able to support anyone who may need their help.

Coa's have no one to turn to, and although 1 in 5 children are affected, they all do it alone as it remains an unspoken secret, very often until the parent/sibling dies which was certainly the case for me.

Nacoa (The National Association for Children of Alcoholics) is a Bristol based charity founded in 1990 to provide help and support for everyone affected by a parent’s drinking. We believe that every child has the right to a happy childhood and to live a creative and meaningful life but when drink is the family secret they are more likely to experience family violence, neglect and other problems in their own homes.
