Story
A group of wonderful ladies around the country will each be walking 1 million steps between 1st Oct 2019 and 1st Jan 2020, so we hope to do over 10 million steps for this amazing charity supporting children of alcoholics!
Coa's often have no-one to turn to if family support is unavailable, and although 1 in 5 children are affected, they may go through this painful time alone, as it remains an unspoken secret, until the parent dies...
We would love children/adults to be able to feel able to speak out from an early age, and Nacoa have amazing resources, with a free confidential helpline/email, private online support group, stories of many others experiences, and advice.
Nacoa (The National Association for Children of Alcoholics) is a Bristol based charity founded in 1990 to provide help and support for everyone affected by a parent’s drinking. They believe that every child has the right to a happy childhood and to live a creative and meaningful life but when drink is the family secret they are more likely to experience family violence, neglect and other problems in their own homes.
There is no lower or upper age limit to be affected by your parent's drinking and sometimes the problems only become apparent in adulthood. You can be affected regardless of whether you are still living with them, whether they are still drinking or even if they are still alive or not.
You can be a child of an alcoholic at 1 or 101. Whatever your age, it doesn't change the fact that your parent, step-parent or carer is, or has been, dependent on alcohol, along with the problems this brings.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
