Story

Not long now before the event! Getting very nervous now xx

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and visiting my just giving page.

Since doing this page my Grandad has passed away from Dementia on 13th Feb 2014 4hrs before his 77th birthday.

My Grandad was diagnosed with Dementia 9years ago and over this time we have seen him change from a confident, self reliant man into someone who doesn't even know his family or how to fend for himself. He was initially diagnosed with having Alzheimer's (This is the most common cause of dementia) but after many tests he was also diagnosed with having Vascular Dementia (occurs following a stroke)

Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse. Grandad started out forgetting to lock his front door, which then lead to him going out places and forgetting where he was, eventually we made the heartbreaking decision and put him in a Care Home, within two years he needed to move again to another Care Home which had nursing care.

Over the past 8+ years we have slowly lost our loved one from Grandad not recognising this family, to becoming aggressive and losing the ability of speech, eating and much more. It is devastating seeing the effects on both Grandad and his immediate family. Grandad is now in the last stages of the progression. The process has had its highs and lows and had many sad times but we are family so we will get through it!

I am fundraising by taking part in the Bupa Great North Run, for those people who know me will know this is a big deal as I hate exercise and running. The money I raise will go to maintaining the helpline and research into the cause, cure, care and prevention of dementia to improve treatment for people today and to search for a cure for tomorrow.

Please donate, even a small amount would be much appreciated and it all goes towards research in fighting this devastating disease.

Event will take place Sunday 7th September 2014.
