As the new Lady Mayoress, I consider the organisation of the Lady Mayoress’ Charity to be one of the most rewarding and important of my duties over the next 12 months.
My chosen charities have been selected as each one I consider to be a worthy cause, contributing to the local community.
In Whitstable I have chosen the local branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution who rely on donations to ensure the safety of water users on our coast.
Whitstable was one of the first ten inshore lifeboat stations in the UK and Republic of Ireland. The crew has received four awards for gallantry, and has been recognised by Her Majesty The Queen in the honours lists. Volunteer crew members come from all walks of life. They readily exchange leisure, comfort, and sleep for cold, wet and fatigue. Their lifesaving work is essential, often difficult and sometimes dangerous.
Strode Park represents Herne Bay. It is an organisation well known locally for helping people with disabilities, and providing full and respite care.
Strode Park Foundation (established 1946) is one of the largest resource centres in Kent for people with disabilities. Located in the village of Herne, Kent, the organisation provides a wide range of care and leisure services to help people live life to the full.
Finally I am supporting the national charity Help for Heroes. Any serving soldier who becomes injured while on duty will receive money from the charity which is spent to best aid their recovery. We have two army regiments within Canterbury that will benefit from this very worthy cause.
Help for Heroes (H4H) was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry after a profoundly moving visit to Selly Oak Hospital in the summer of 2007. The money that is raised at Help for Heroes is used to support wounded Servicemen and women of every colour and creed. The message is simple: H4H does not seek to criticise or be political, it simply wants to help and does so by asking everyone to do their bit to raise money.
All these charities are in need of our support. The monies raised will be shared between the charities.
Please support the fund raising events, as every little helps and is appreciated by those dedicated workers within their own organisations.
With best wishes,
Barbara Todd
Lady Mayoress of Canterbury
