Story

Larsen is 4 years old and in August he was diagnosed with an optic pathway glioma on his right eye. This benign tumour means that he has lost vision in that eye now and can’t get it back. In November an MRI scan showed that the tumour had grown and in order to protect vision in his left eye, he had to start treatment. Treatment is a long course of relatively weak chemotherapy, probably around 12 months as an outpatient at QMC Children’s Hospital.

We are two months in and Larsen is doing superbly. He has been so brave and resilient having a portacath put in for his medicine and getting used to the new box under his skin. Every week he puts up with a finger prick blood test and then the chemo through the port without any fuss or complaint - all of the nurses praise him for being such a superstar and we like them lots too!

Last New Year, he was only three and we talked to him about resolutions. He said he wanted to learn to read and write. And considering the enormous journey he has been on with his vision this year (including awful occlusion patching for a misdiagnosed lazy eye), he has persevered, this year writing all of his own Christmas and thank you cards.

So when we talked about resolutions again this year, we knew that Larsen would be motivated and keen to achieve. He wants to raise money for The Big Appeal at Nottingham Children’s Hospital to give something back for the outstanding care he has received there (and to get his name on their Wall of Fame!) Have a google and see how they’ll spend the money you donate.

We haven’t set a date yet, we want to get some sponsorship in first, but hopefully in the Easter holidays 2019, Larsen will complete the challenge he has set himself... to tour Nottingham and slide down the marathon number of 26 slides in a day! It’s tough... but someone’s got to do it!
