As many of you know, this was a huge shock to us all. After 18 months of not knowing that our mother had cervical cancer, countless trips to the doctors, fortnightly stays in the hospital, even MRI scans, the cancer was not detected. It all started when we had to ring the ambulance on Christmas Day, 2018. Her daughter Lauren spent the afternoon in hospital with her Mum due to high blood pressure (they say this is the start of cervical cancer symptoms). She became very ill, she lost a lot of weight and was always in excruciating pain which the Doctors put it down to her kidney’s. She had numerous operations to try help the problems, but as they were focusing on her kidney’s, they did not detect her cancer was getting worse. Watching our beautiful, vibrant, funny Mum deteriorate over the past 18 months was heart breaking to us all. We just couldn’t understand why she wasn’t getting better considering all the treatments she had received. Still throughout this all, our Mum continued her career in caring for sick people herself. She was such a loving and giving person. Although she was suffering so much herself, she continued to care for others. Until, however, this all became too much for her and her Doctor advised she wouldn’t be able to return to work again. One of her kidneys was failing and she was seriously ill. But she was determined to one day eventually get back up on her feet and go to work. She is our inspiration. She is the reason why we have even coped with the loss, we know she has given us the strength to continue living our life in memory of her, and not to go down a downward spiral.

The Diagnosis and the worst day of our lives.

After the new year, we noticed our Mum become even more ill. She became a regular at the hospitals, it was rare to actually see our Mum at home with us. Watching her every night in so much pain broke our hearts. She is a tough woman, and when offered help from us she would refuse. If it was her kidneys failing, she would have a queue out the door for a donor. We had no doubt about this. We became confused, angry, upset that she wasn’t getting better although she had countless operations, hundreds of prescriptions for anti-biotics, nothing would work. She would get sepsis and would have to spend weeks in the hospital. She was sent to the Women’s Hospital to get another MRI scan as a Doctor at Aintree Hospital had finally put his foot down and said something is not right. She was advised she may have cancer but this was not confirmed until the MRI scan and of course, she did not tell her daughters or family this. On 6th May, she went in for her scan. Hours later our Dad had came to our house, we looked at him and We just knew. We burst into tears and was telling him to go away not want to accept it. He told us that our Mum, has been diagnosed with Stage 4 terminal cancer, they could not help her, it was too late. Our whole world shattered in front of us. We can not describe the pain we felt that day. We just wanted to hold her and tell her we loved her. Our beautiful Mum, not given the chance to watch her kids, Lauren, Rachel and Daniel ever get married, to ever be a grandparent as she always dreamt to be. We pulled our socks up, wiped our tears and came together as a family. Her bestfriend and sister, Karen, her sisters Denise and Janet, her cousin Jo and my Dad, (and everyone else who was there for us, thank you, we cannot thank you all enough) we came together and promised to each other and ourselves we would make this the best last few months of her life. Unfortunately, as they say when you are advised you are terminal, sometimes when someone has suffered that much trauma and pain, there body begins to accept it, and starts slowly shutting down. We was advised on the 10th May, she would pass in a matter of days. We were all there for her until the very end. She was at home with us all, we stayed by her bedside and comforted her every second of the day. She still made us cry laughing with her humour, her personality shun through them last few days she had left and we knew she was doing that for us.

She passed away on the 17th May 2020. Peacefully with us all holding her hand and comforting her. Our hearts were broken. We want to raise awareness for cervical cancer screening for our beautiful Elaine. We will always remember her as the funny, crazy, loving woman she was. Forever in our hearts always. XXXXX
